#011 SKINNY LOVE (BON IVER COVER). so many issues with this recording! for one, i was sleepy when i was working on it. that’s why i forgot to use a capo (which is why the recorded track really isn’t in my ready-to-falsetto key), and why i derped all over the place with the melodica. and before S points it out; YES, i know i need to just (wo)man up and use a metronome / click track.
i kind of like how it turned out, though. we’ll see if the person who requested this feels the same way.
I made one of those signs for you. :3
I wanted to yesterday but I was all ill and couldn't get out of bed. :(
Also: do you have AIM or anything? I only recently got it thanks to AlmostTechnicolor but umm, ASK BOXES AREN'T CONVENIENT AND Y'KNOW, I STALK YOU. *blush*
i saw! thank you so much, elle. <3 as for your question, um. there should be a link to my AIM screen name underneath the EP ads to the left of my tumblr page. just look at the lower left corner of the screen.
if you’re so inclined, please check out my friend M’s band. he’s got a fantastic voice — the distinctive, unique and easily recognizable kind. (i’d give anything to have that! hnnngh.) M does killer elvis covers, but of course i’d much rather hear originals.
his band went and did the whole recording recently; can’t wait for the EP. circus bear sounds reckless, raunchy and straight up rock & roll.
Hello there! Mr Doble tagged me on a post that led me here! I just had to say... Wow, I'm digging your music! :D And reading the words "Clever Cover Stories" made me do a little dance because, well, there's a Dashboard connection. Haha. Lastly, your mom and I have the same dog. WITH THE SAME NAME. How odd is that? Only my pup is named after Cinderella's dog. :D Anyhoo, I'm looking forward to hearing more music from you. /*clicks on follow button, and bookmarks page*/ Cheers!
hey! thanks for listening to my music. let me know if you want to hear anything in particular. :)
#010 BESAME MUCHO (COVER). this is an old recording i made for C (to highlight the fact that he is the whitest mexican alive — don’t ask). “besame mucho” was my grandmother’s favorite spanish song; that’s why i know the lyrics and the melody so well. i’m sure that i’m butchering the language and mispronouncing things left and right — sorry for that.
the year my grandmother died (2005) i planned on getting a tattoo to remember her by — matching text. ("como si fuera esta noche, la ultima vez" and "que tengo miedo a perderte, perderte despues"; one on each side. either behind my ears, around my ankles, or somewhere along my back… anywhere that would make the placement somewhat symmetrical.) i still haven’t gotten it; sometimes i still don’t really want to admit that my lola is gone.
If you're interested in another Yeats, I think He Wishes For the Cloths of Heaven would be awesome (http://www.online-literature.com/yeats/776/) or Failing and Flying by Jack Gilbert (http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/16872).
Umm, I know you get requests all the time, but I was listening to Supermassive Black Hole by Muse and thought you'd probably be able to cover it pretty well if you wanted to so umm....just wondering. ^^;;
this is quite a challenging request! sure, i’ll put it in my list. thanks again for listening, elle. <3
ill-give-you-the-world said: Errm, I don’t know if you know Byron’s stanzas for music? I speak not, I breathe not, I trace not thy name…might just work :)
hello, ill-give-you-the-world! those are 2 different poems, yes? you’re sort of quoting “i speak not — i trace not.” the “stanzas for music” starts off with “there be none of beauty’s daughters.” i may give the former a try; thanks for the suggestion. :)
I was the one who requested you to cover 'Skinny Love' :) But likewise, been in love with the song & just Bon Iver in general for a while now. Made a start at learning to play 'Skinny Love' a few days ago too. Their new album is out June 21st, incase you didnt know, I'm so excited for it!
oh, it was you! i have to thank you for requesting “skinny love.” learning the song has really helped motivate me to practice and improve my guitar work. <3
“i have enough problems dealing with the fact that my life isn’t exactly the way i planned it; but when i see something i don’t like, i do something about it or i accept it and move on. i don’t give up. at the very core of my being, how i react to what life gives me is a reflection of how i see and understand myself. i’m not a quitter; i know what my passion is, and because i do know it, i have something to live for.”—A Problem Like Maria
#009 I’VE GOT YOU UNDER MY SKIN (FRANK SINATRA COVER). this is my go-to song whenever someone says, “sing sinatra!” i always have a lot of fun singing it, even though i always inevitably make a mistake with the chords.
things i need to do: run cellar doors harmonies with I. write 8 bars for the cellar doors’ “it’s alright.” work on my second collaboration with almost technicolor (at least get some lyrics down). record a new vocal track for “headshot heartbreak” (gramps). send M chords for “his mother should know.” fix the production schedule for “i’ll be seeing you.” fix the production schedule for “radio wire empire solves a problem like maria.” schedule 5 other collaborations (kik, medik, superalex,TGP, WM). listen to “fear of flight” again and again, before writing a review. buy a mic stand. buy an adapter for my keyboard. record “skinny love.” record a non-english song. listen and familiarize myself with the melody of billie holiday’s “crazy he calls me.”
OH, HELL NO. i can do this. just breathe. <3 and be beautiful.
#008 STAR CROSSED. this is not the final version of this song, let me make that clear now. that being said, this is not exactly a new composition. “star crossed” was my wedding gift to my husband; i composed it years ago, and when we got married (one year ago today, huzzah!) i asked a few close friends to perform this song during the reception.
still not happy with the way the recording turned out — i’m almost 100% sure that a proper arrangement of this song requires a full band — but since no one has ever heard me sing the full song properly (not even my husband), i figured this would be a nice anniversary surprise. ta-daaah.
last weekend was more about planning and less about doing.
things finally fell into place for SEBASTIEN & MARIA and RADIO WIRE EMPIRE SOLVES A PROBLEM LIKE MARIA. 2 side projects with (respectively) 2 very, very talented musicians; the next 3 months are going to be exciting and most definitely challenging — but in a good way. important dates are the 1st of june and the 17th of july. mark you calendars!
i recorded several tracks for your daily wave upon the sand, and worked on 2 covers that i plan on laying down tracks for over the next 2-3 weeks, in between stressing about the 2 EPs and practicing harmonies for the cellar doors (as usual). one thing that i totally forgot to do was to re-track my vocals for “headshot heartbreak,” my collaboration with the very cranky gramps. i’ll get on it next weekend, i promise.
there’s also been talk of more one-shot electronic collaborations between me and several musicians i recently met; nothing fleshed out yet, though. and i do want to finish a second song with almost technicolor first (because he’s THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST), before i work on other electonic stuff.
lastly, i’ve really been learning using a pick (not finger picking, just literally using a pick to play the guitar) and trying the whole standing up while singing with the guitar thing. this may sound silly to some people, but it’s true; i need the practice.
#007 HEY YA (OUTKAST COVER). yeah… i didn’t do the part that everyone knows (“shake it like a polaroid picture!”) but i’m pretty happy with this. an anonymous person requested it last weekend, and i only got to uploading it now.
Seriously, though. Thank you very much. I don't know if this will make much sense, but your voice and music really makes me feel a lot better about myself, just by listening to it. I often find it really hard to go on and stuff, and your songs, I discovered today, help a lot.
Keep making beautiful music, lady.
i’m at a loss for words. (seriously, i’ve been staring at your words for like, 30 minutes now.) you don’t know how much those words mean to me.
I:I really, really can't wait to bring you up on stage.
APLM:i'm working on that confidence.
I:J calls you our ace in the hole, our secret weapon.
APLM:awww. can i just say that i knew who J was/is coming into this thing. he's really an amazing musician.
I:he is, he totally is...
APLM:and every practice i'm like, "OMG, HE DOESN'T THINK I SUCK!" WHAT IS THIIIIS? so yeah. can you tell i was a gigantic twisted halo fan?
I:dude, he really respects your talent, as do I. I don't think you know how good you are. I mean, REALLY know. that's why we both want to see you blossom onstage, because we BOTH can see what you're capable of.
APLM:aw, let's not get into that. but yeah i'm so lucky to be working with you guys! when i listen to you, i'm like... OKAY, HOW DO I GET TO THIS POINT? where confidence is just oozing out. you're really an inspiration as well.
I:trust me... it will come, and you will look back and smile at how you thought it was so hard, when it really wasn't. it will become second nature to you.
What do I say? I say that sounds like a pretty freaking awesome idea! Or to put it in the words of the voice of our generation, Rebecca Black: "We, we so excited!"
hah. okay, this is going to take a while (i usually say this whenever i make a commitment to record something, don’t worry about it) but I WILL DO THIS. i promise. one non-english song with my ukelele and my melodica, coming up!
thank you so much for following my blog and listening to my music. <3
We'd really appreciate it if you reviewed Fear of Flight or any of our other mixtapes we have out. I'll send you the download links to all of them.
Fear of Flight
Dinner and a Movie: 2.14
Solitude and Self-Destruction: A Man's Tale (Instrumental CD produced by Ken-I)
An Ode to the Heart and Soul: Volume 1 & 2 (Instrumental CD produced by Ken-I)
it might take a while to do all of them, but i’ll see if i can do it. it’s music related anyway, which is the point of this blog(!). and i loved fear of flight; i’ll start with that. (by the way, you didn’t need to send me the links, i already have all of that on my hard drive, haha.)
check out my music, too, if you have the time. i haven’t done anything hip hop in a (long ass) minute, but it’s still got my heart. <3
Melodica? Awesome. Now if you spoke French and covered Coralie Clément's "C'est la vie" using your new toy and your trusty old Ukulele my life would be pretty much complete. Just not entirely sure how probable this is.
sadly i do not speak french! even if i memorize the lyrics i would probably massacre the french language trying to pronounce the words correctly. (my main piano man S is probably cringing at the thought of this.) i do like the song, though. thanks for sharing it with me, anon!
what i can offer you is a promise to do a song in a language other than english, with my ukelele, pixie (and maybe my melodica, as soon as i figure out how exactly to use it correctly); a sort of consolation prize, or a next best thing, if you will. what do you say?
#006 NEVER GIVE ALL THE HEART (W.B. YEATS). i’ve done one roald dahl and one robert frost poem each, but i’ve always just read the words while playing the guitar. here in “never give all the heart” i actually sing some parts. a good idea — yes/no? only time (and your feedback) will tell.
