…just a few days ago, somebody plucked from obscurity gave us one of our favorite singles of the year so far! A Problem Like Maria debuted the track “Gossamer Wings” off her first full length album, 99 Problems And Maria Is 1. It’s actually a downtempo piece with a gorgeous, minimalist vibe that plays just oh-so-perfect for late night walks on empty, big-city street. The beats wind up feeling relaxed and earnest from start to finish, while Maria raps with a sexy strut that could cool down even the running rage of a man. And wait ‘til you hear her sing the hook in the chorus. It’s pure sex, soul and fiirreee…
#177 YOU’VE GOT NOBODY (FEAT. TIMOTHY ZEN MELLONCHOLY). a lovely track off my album, and one of the more challenging ones; all in all four people worked on this song — three people in three different states in the US, and me all the way over here in the urban jungles of asia.
while talking to a friend about my mixing/mastering troubles (in general, and also during this whole process of getting my hip hop album out), i mentioned that two things are inevitable whenever i work with a producer — any producer at all, no matter how (in)experienced s/he is: i complain that my voice is too loud, and i say that the track needs more bass.
from this we have concluded that this is my life’s motto: “lay low, and listen for the bass.”
instead of attending what was probably the biggest local hip hop event of the year, i stayed in and did some heavy recording / mixing / mastering for the album with rekapper; as well as some planning for the hai. also got some work started on a new collab with MH — a female producer! so excited; it’ll be a first for me.
album update: as of this moment we’ve got eight out of the 15 songs of the album in separated instrumental/vocal tracks — three from nemo hose, two from new dark age, two from rabbit hole revelations and one from prosthetic leg. ghost night is sending over his files tomorrow, and nemo hose and new dark age are each sending their respective last songs. the only unaccounted for producer is frownbox, who emailed me early last week to ask if rekapper could mix in my vocals instead of him (to which i replied in the affirmative). hopefully he sends his instrumentals soon.
after this album is finished i’ll finally be free to work on that EP with six the northstar, devote more time to my X-deal project with somnitone, and work on new across oceans songs. i’ll see about setting up the music room at my house, too. it will probably be too echoey to record final vocals unless i do some major remodeling, but the space should be fine for songwriting and WIP recording.
the hai update: along with the release of our second compilation on the fifth of may, we’re also launching our website. (not really, the wordpress has been around a while; we just went and got ourselves a snazzy domain name, haha.) and we’re also welcoming new members to the fold! yay.
that’s about it; short and sweet. i may not have a solid music weekend for the next week or two, just to take a break after the album, so until then it’ll be mostly writing lyrics… and probably getting back to my guitar. yup.
#175 SAYANG LANG (A PROBLEM LIKE MARIA). this isn’t even really an APLM song — i wrote it a long, long time ago and actually almost threw it away! thank god i didn’t. this version now serves as my demo… and it’s going to be a cellar doors song. we arranged it last week and it sounds amazing. can’t wait to debut it on the 26th.
