I don’t think anyone who’s ever heard “Heart-Shaped Box” and knew even an inkling of context had any doubt that it was about Courtney Love’s vagina, even though most of us have probably tried to ignore that when we listen it, because it makes a depressing song even more depressing, among other things. Moreover, it’s gross that a widow whose husband took his own life is on Twitter bragging that he referred to her vagina as a “noose” in a violently soul-wrenching song. But that’s Courtney for ya. Lizzie Grant, you have much to learn.
#206 IF WE HOLD ON TOGETHER (LAND BEFORE TIME SOUNDTRACK COVER). now i don’t know if this even applies anymore — i might be showing my age — but when i was a kid, EVERYONE cried when they heard this song. bar none. haha. if you don’t know what it is, look up “land before time,” and you’ll see what i mean.
thought i’d post a little something without vocals for a change, and also to represent what i’m currently working on — that is, more keyboard presence in my songs, which will hopefully be reflected in my EP, which comes out soonish (late august!).
#205 EVICTION NOTICE (ACOUSTIC). getting tired of just having one of my hip hop songs on the ready for acoustic sets, so i arranged “eviction notice,” as well. i think it turned out okay. someone told me that rap with an acoustic guitar just sort of reminds them of flight of the conchords, but i suppose i can live with that.
i’m not crying… it’s just raining on my face. haha, kidding! anyway, i hope you guys enjoyed this little snippet.
A team led by artificial intelligence specialist Joan Serra at the Spanish National Research Council ran music from the last 50 years through some complex algorithms and found that pop songs have become intrinsically louder and more bland in terms of the chords, melodies and types of sound used.
"We found evidence of a progressive homogenization of the musical discourse," Serra told Reuters. "In particular, we obtained numerical indicators that the diversity of transitions between note combinations - roughly speaking chords plus melodies - has consistently diminished in the last 50 years."
They also found the so-called timbre palette has become poorer. The same note played at the same volume on, say, a piano and a guitar is said to have a different timbre, so the researchers found modern pop has a more limited variety of sounds.
#204 MARCELINE’S SONG (ADVENTURE TIME COVER). just a quick practice track (a.k.a. figuring out how to make the ukulele not sound like shit through this mic) — this isn’t the final cover yet! and this key is definitely too low for me.
maybe i should do the full version and not the one that’s in the cartoon itself. what do you think?
#203 MAALAALA MO KAYA (COVER). this is a practice track that my bandmate J and i (he played the guitar) recorded using a phone. some time ago, the two vocalists of the cellar doors (I and i) sang at a book launch held at the filipinas heritage library — this practice track was part of our prepping for that.
