#245 CRASH TEST MERMAID (RIZZA CABRERA / THE LITTLE MERMAID COVER). So I tried to cover a song by Rizza Cabrera (also known as one of “my” interns, haha), and I ran out of breath sometime during my third or fourth take. THESE KIDS! I can’t keep up with them and their music.
I also added something from The Little Mermaid just because I could—and just because I’ve had that idea in my head for months now and finally it’s out in the open and I free from obsessing about it, finally. Hahaha!
#244 LUTANG (CELLAR DOORS VERSION DEMO) (THE CELLAR DOORS). this song is a joy to perform live, and i love how any person i perform it with just gets into the groove instinctively. this is another one shot demo recorded via my ancient nokia, and already i love it more than my solo demo. those little chord changes our drummer suggested make all the difference!
we did this during band practice, sans bassist and without a mic for our main vocalist (i’m usually a backup vocalist! heehee.)—not bad, right? that outro is the bomb; wish i’d thought of that ending progression myself. :3
#243 GREEN-EYED LOAF (A PROBLEM LIKE MARIA). the other week, loaf and i were left alone at the office. it was a rainy night and i was done working. loaf was bored, so i sang him a song. :3
(one shot recording using a ukulele and my ancient nokia, with loaf running around in the background.)
#242 LOVE LIKE (STRATOSFEAR FEAT. A PROBLEM LIKE MARIA). i’ve been waiting for forever to be able to share this song with everyone, and now it’s finally out! <3
#241 BREAK MY HEART (ROBOTEYES COVER). bored and feeling up to a challenge, i asked ryan of roboteyes if he wanted to hear me cover anything—and he said “break my heart.” not really a surprising choice, but it left me more than a little agitated. (because while i love covering songs, it’s an entirely different story when you know without a doubt that the original artist will for sure hear your version—the feels! it’s indescribable. already dealt with this when i covered loonie’s “tao lang” and leadership by assault’s “sober up,” though.)
anyway. here’s my take on “break my heart.” can i just say that this song is EXACTLY in my key? holy shit.
#240 I FALL TO PIECES (PATSY CLINE COVER). getting the hang of the new mic. finally done with the physical adjusting; now it’s more of handling how the raw track interacts with post-processing. right now when i try to apply reverb it’s a little wonky. my guess it that this is a lot easier than it sounds, haha!
the setup was in place so i could record backing vocals for WGWGSA, but i hadn’t done something in a while so i figured i could use the practice. :)
#239 ‘TIL THE RIGHT ONE COMES ALONG (DAVE CLARK FIVE COVER). so my brother started recording his vocal takes here at the hills (also known as my music room) a couple of months ago, and last thursday he brought along a condenser mic borrowed from a friend of his. we set it up and it worked fine with him, but when i tried to record with it the vocal takes sounded terrible!
long story short, i was troubleshooting the entire morning, and JUST NOW got it working right. won’t trouble you guys with an explanation because now that i know what the problem was, i feel really stupid—like i was counting to potato for hours.
ANYWAY. this is an old song that i’ve always loved; figured it was an easy song so i ran through all my mic tests this morning using the verse/chorus/end. my dad plays this on the guitar and sings it a lot; probably every other time he sits down to practice. don’t anyone tell him that i sang it though—he’ll just get all mushy and i’ll get all embarrassed. hahaha!
here is me through a condenser mic. hopefully there a little bit more bass in my voice; god knows i need it.
#238 TELEPHONE (STEPH MILLS FEAT. RUGGZ & A PROBLEM LIKE MARIA). oh my goodness, i’ve been waiting for this song for forever! steph asked me to sing the hook of this song ages ago, and i actually thought that she only used one hook (i sent four, i think). glad she included more than just the main chorus of the song—thought this turned out really well. :)
when i grow up, i want to rap like steph mills! hahaha. until then, though, i’m content singing her songs’ hooks.
#237 JUST GIVE ME A REASON (PINK FEAT. NATE RUESS) (COVER). started as a study/demo for my band (because one of them wanted to cover this), but while i was finding out if the original key would fit my voice, i thought, “why not?”—and just straight up recorded the thing. i KNOW the bridge isn’t right, and the chorus should repeat more after where i ended; but this ismeant to be a duet, come on.
it may be a pop song, but boy does pink use her vocal range in this one. the verses are just a hair too low for me to sing comfortably, and the bridge is just a hair too high too high to belt without taking more than a few seconds to rest before recording—probably should have just punched in.
